In a significant stride towards improving the living standards of Punjab’s citizens, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has inaugurated a new online portal for the “Apni Chhat…Apna Ghar” programme. This initiative, accessible at acag.punjab.gov.pk, is designed to simplify the process for citizens seeking financial assistance to build or complete their homes. The programme offers an innovative financial solution for property owners in both urban and rural areas. Under the scheme, individuals owning land between one to five marlas in urban areas and one to ten marlas in rural zones are eligible for a loan of up to Rs1.5 million. This loan comes with the benefit of a seven-year repayment period, allowing for manageable monthly installments. Notably, the programme is structured to provide maximum relief, with no repayments required during the first three months of loan disbursement.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the government’s proactive role in this initiative, stating, “Punjab is taking the lead in the sector. The entire government machinery is working vigorously. I am working continuously for 16 hours per day.” Her statement reflects a deep commitment to ensuring the success of this programme, which has been inspired by the legacy of Nawaz Sharif. During his tenure, Nawaz Sharif distributed land to small peasants, a move that had a profoundly positive impact, particularly noted in Sindh. Maryam Nawaz echoed this sentiment, remarking that providing a person with their own roof is the most valuable service one can offer.
The programme promises to be user-friendly and transparent. There are no hidden charges or service fees, and the maximum monthly installment is capped at Rs14,000. This level of financial clarity is intended to make home ownership more accessible to a broader segment of the population.
In addition to the housing initiative, Chief Minister Nawaz announced a substantial relief measure in the form of reduced electricity bills. The Punjab government is set to provide a massive Rs45 billion relief package to ease the burden on consumers. This effort is complemented by an ambitious plan to launch one of the largest solar panel projects in the province’s history. The goal is to mitigate the problem of high utility bills in the coming years.
Maryam Nawaz also highlighted the quality standards that will be enforced in housing construction. She assured that all houses built under the programme would adhere to the highest quality standards, akin to model houses. For those already in the process of constructing their homes, the programme offers additional financial support to complete their projects. This provision ensures that ongoing construction efforts can benefit from the scheme, enhancing the overall impact of the initiative.
The programme will initially be rolled out in five to six districts, with plans to expand it across Punjab. This phased approach allows for the careful implementation and scaling of the initiative to maximize its effectiveness and reach.
In a separate event, Chief Minister Nawaz extended her message of goodwill to the people of Sindh, expressing a desire for mutual benefit and shared progress. She acknowledged the Rs14 per unit relief on electricity bills provided to Punjab residents and voiced a wish for similar relief in Sindh. Her comments reflected a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect between the provinces, emphasizing that while change takes time, collective efforts towards public welfare are crucial.
